It’s day one on your fitness journey, and after a wonderful total body workout, you can start to feel the soreness creeping into your muscles as you make your way home. Previous attempts at fitness have taught you that you’ll have to act fast if you want to be able to walk like a normal person tomorrow. So what can you do?
What Causes After-Workout Soreness?
Technically, you’re sore post-exercise because you damaged your muscles.Your body starts repairing itself by triggering inflammation. The harder you work, the more pain you’ll feel later on. Each time you damage the muscle tissues, they get a little bit stronger and more resilient during the repair. And, even though the saying goes “no pain, no gain”, you can greatly reduce your after-workout soreness with a few simple tricks.
1. Drink Away the Soreness!
One of the absolute best things you can do before, during, and after you exercise is to hydrate! Maintaining your hydration is key to reducing pain after a workout. Water will keep fluids moving throughout your body, eliminating toxins and bringing your muscles the vital nutrients they need to accomplish your fitness goals.
2. Soak in a Hot Tub
Heat therapy is famous for treating pain, and a hot tub makes for an excellent after-exercise treat. When you soak in a spa, you’re actually increasing your blood flow. This brings more oxygen-rich blood to your muscles for a quick recovery. It also reduces inflammation so you experience minimal pain and stiffness after that gym session.
3. Eat Something Good
It may sound counterproductive, but eating some good-for-you food about thirty minutes after an intense workout can go a long way in preventing pain later on. Try to eat 20-30 grams of protein to give your muscles the nutrients they need to repair faster and become stronger.
