It’s official, summer is over. But you don’t have to be too sad, because we’re entering prime spa season! Before you fire up the hot tub though, your spa probably needs some fall maintenance. But don’t worry, it’s easy. Here’s what to do.
1. Drain it
Hot tubs, with the exception of saltwater spas, need to be drained and refilled every three to four months. The start of each season is the perfect time to do this. You’ve probably used it all summer long, and even if you’ve kept up a chemical balancing routine, you’ll want fresh water to enjoy throughout autumn and into the winter season. So, start fall with a freshly cleaned hot tub.
2. Change Your Filter
The last thing you want to find is cloudy or foamy spa water. A clean filter goes a long way towards keeping your hot tub healthy and clean. It also helps protect your pump from damage. You should clean your filter quite regularly and change it out completely once a year. While completing your fall maintenance is a great time to check this off your to-do list.
3. Care for Your Cabinet
Before you fill your hot tub, wash your spa cabinets. The cabinets are easily one of the most neglected parts of your hot tub and all summer long it’s collected grass from Saturday morning yard work, pollen, and all sorts of other debris. Wash your cabinets each time you drain and refill your hot tub to keep your spa looking brand new.
4. Check Your Cover
As you’re in the process of refilling your hot tub, check out your spa cover for rips, tears, or any other damage. Keeping your cover in tip-top shape is one of the keys to saving money on energy consumption, water, and chemical usage. You can also give it a good scrub down with soapy water after you inspect it to keep it in good condition for the future.
